Russell Smith was recently nominated for the 2010 Federal Engineer of the Year award for his work as a nuclear engineer at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, WA. Russell specializes in the design of equipment and structures supporting the maintenance, overhaul, and disposal of the Navy’s ships and submarines. He is one of 29 engineers from various federal agencies nominated for the award, which is sponsored and presented by the National Society of Professional Engineers.
Russell married Beth Schieler (Class of 1993) in 1998 after earning his BA in Engineering Physics from Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, CA. The Smiths moved to Corvallis, OR where Russell completed a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree at Oregon State University in 2000. He has worked as an engineer at the shipyard in Bremerton, WA since 2000. Russell and Beth have two daughters, Claire and Ella. Russell is the son of Russ (OCS bus mechanic for over 30 years) and Catherine Smith.
