Art

Because Ontario Christian School promotes a Christian liberal arts system, art classes are an important part of each child’s education. At Ontario Christian we believe in the education of the whole child and encourage each individual to develop all talents to their full potential for God’s glory and for use as His servants. We are called to be imitators of God, and therefore, we image Him as creators. Through art education, awareness and appreciation of God’s awesome creation and the general revelation of His being and existence are enhanced. As in the overall goals of Ontario Christian, the art curriculum strives for student understanding, decision-making, and service. Instruction in art helps claim all areas of life and learning for God and develops skills that students can use throughout their lives.

In art class, students will:

  • Develop the artistic skills and abilities that are a gift from God. Students will work in a variety of media, including ceramics. Students will develop drawing, painting, and construction skills.
  • Use and understand vocabulary associated with the discussion and production of art.
  • Recognize the role of art in reflecting and being reflected by culture, society, and the beliefs of mankind throughout history.
  • Develop discernment to make wise aesthetic and evaluative judgments regarding works of art.
  • Experience pleasure in self-expression and in finished creation as God did in His creation.
  • Glorify God by developing the abilities He has given and by presenting their best work.
  • Demonstrate good stewardship of time and materials as befit Christian students.

All students at Ontario Christian have the opportunity to experience art education in an art classroom under the supervision of an art specialist. Elementary students (K–6) also have opportunities to work on art projects in their regular classrooms.

  • 2–6: Art instruction with the specialist is for one hour every other week.
  • 7–8: Art instruction with the specialist is for approximately forty minutes three times a week for one semester. Art opportunities are also offered during exploratory classes which meet daily for one quarter.

Student work on the elementary campus is displayed in the classrooms. All elementary students create artwork that is displayed at the annual Harvest Festival. The Middle School students (7–8) create an art portfolio to store and keep their projects. During the spring, Grades 5–8 participate in the Fine Arts Festival. Artwork from a variety of categories is selected by a group of judges to be sent to the festival. This artwork is matted or framed by the school. The festival is sponsored by four or more Christian schools. At the festival, the artwork is judged based the elements of art and principals of design. The students are awarded ribbons and the adjudication forms with the judges’ scores and comments are returned to them. The work of high school students may be entered in competitions or be displayed in local businesses. Student artwork at all levels may also be displayed in the school offices, at various school functions, or on the school’s website.
