Personalized Education

  QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
1    Why would our family be interested in personalized education?
Personalized education would allow families choices in the pace of when the student would graduate. Some families may prefer the student to take courses more rapidly or slowly than normally offered. This may allow students to graduate anytime between three to five years.
One incentive for completing high school graduation requirements early is to be more involved in dual enrollment. This may save significant high school and/or college tuition. A second incentive is that the student may enter college or other experience at an earlier time. It is also possible that the student may be able to take more courses and have a broader educational experience. This option would be especially appealing to families who travel, or who may be unavailable during the regular school season. Personalized education will also be an attraction for students who want to take elective courses, such as band and choir, which cannot otherwise fit into the student?s schedule.
2    Is personalized education for all grade levels?
Personalized education that allows on-campus education and home education is available for grades kindergarten through twelve. OCOnline is available for grades three through twelve.
Personalized education that permits faster progress through the grades is limited to high school. Students who have completed all of the eighth grade graduation requirements are then eligible to begin taking courses that lead to high school credits.
3    Are Associate and Partner Families eligible for tuition assistance?
Associate families are not eligible for tuition assistance. Partner families may apply to the third party company for eligibility for tuition assistance. Tuition assistance applies only for students in grades kindergarten through twelve. Families must have their student enrolled in a regular classroom at Ontario Christian for the equivalent of at least three periods per day. Tuition assistance will be based only on the cost of education for the classes enrolled in the regular classroom, thus excluding PSP fees, online courses, and summer classes. Applications are considered in the order applications are submitted.
4    What are the rules for when the student is on campus?
·         Students who take any day courses on campus must be in Ontario Christian School approved uniform.
·         Students must sign in and out at the school office.
·         Ontario Christian has a closed campus policy. Students may be present on the school campus only for the times during which they have courses or as approved due to open times due to scheduling.
·         If students have open time due to scheduling, they will be assigned to study hall or other supervised location as determined by the school. If there is more than one period between classes, there will be an additional fee or separate arrangements made between the school and the family.
·         Part-time students are under the same school policies and penalties as full-time students during their time on campus, e.g., tardies, absences, detentions, faults, etc.
5    To what extent will the scheduling of on-campus courses accommodate my student?
Every effort is made to schedule courses to accommodate most students. The master schedule is designed to meet the needs to students who are attending Ontario Christian full time. However, the PSP director will work with other administrators to arrange the best scheduling options for the part-time student. Those taking on-campus courses are expected to meet all of the class obligations, such as participating in concerts and programs.
6    Are there any differences in graduation requirements?
To graduate and receive an OC diploma, students must meet all OC graduation requirements, e.g., course requirements. The student must meet all other requirements for graduation, e.g., documented service hours, or other requirements.
7    Must the student take some courses on campus?
The school may require students to take some courses on-campus, e.g., Christian Leadership, specific Bible courses, etc., as determined by the school.
8    What are dual enrollment courses and what is the difference between this and Advanced Placement courses?
Dual enrollment courses are specified classes taken on the OC campus during the regular schedule. The student completing a dual enrollment course will receive academic credit from Community Christian College (cccollege.edu), and Ontario Christian School. This is an actual college course with college academic expectations. These credits are transferable to specified accredited colleges including Azusa Pacific University, Biola University, Calvin College, Northwestern College, Point Loma Nazarene University, Westmont College, Wheaton College, and others. Other colleges may accept the credits, but each college has its own policies for acceptance or additional requirements.
Students taking Advance Placement courses receive high school credit. Students take a subject test at the end of the school year. Most colleges accept AP credits for students who receive the high test scores. Individual college policies determine acceptance standards. There are additional fees for dual enrollment and AP courses.
9    What will the student?s transcript indicate?
The student?s transcript will reflect the means by which approved courses were taken, for example, PSP, online, or other designation as determined by the school.
10 Will the student receive an Ontario Christian School diploma?
Students who meet all OC course and graduation requirements will receive an OC diploma, regardless of whether the courses were taken on or off campus.
11 Will the student be able to participate in graduation ceremonies?
Students who meet all of the requirements for OC graduation may participate in graduation ceremonies. Ontario Christian graduation ceremonies are held only at the end of the school year.
12 May a PSP student participate in Ontario Christian School events?
Ontario Christian welcomes PSP student participation and identity as a student of this school. PSP students are recognized as attending Ontario Christian School. These students may receive a student ID card, attend athletic and other events and pay the student rate, have a student picture included in the school yearbook. However, some activities are reserved for those who are on-campus students.
            Elementary and middle school:
All PSP students, even those not taking any on-campus classes, may participate in after school clubs and programs, such as chess club. PSP students are invited to attend chapel. PSP families may make arrangements to use the school library.
Students taking one to four on-campus classes may participate in all of the activities associated with that course, including field trips and presentations. For example, students taking on-campus physical education may participate in Green and Gold Field Day; those taking music or language arts may participate in the Fine Arts program, and those taking sixth grade science are eligible for the field trip to Catalina Island.
At the middle school level, students must take three or more on-campus classes to participate in athletics, serve on Associated Student Body, or participate in the middle school retreat or extended class trip such as Washington D.C.
Some of these field trips or activities do require additional fees. PSP parents may or may not be invited to participate depending on the event and may also be subject to an additional participation fee.
High School:
All PSP students, even those not taking any on-campus classes, may participate in after school clubs, programs and attend chapel, assemblies, rallies, and social events. For example, this includes attendance at the junior-senior banquet, grad night activities, and the senior service project. PSP families may make arrangements to use the school library. Those completing all Ontario Christian graduation requirements may participate in graduation ceremonies.
At the high school level, students must take three or more on-campus classes to participate in athletics or serve on the Associated Student Body. Some state or national organizations such as National Honor Society and California Scholarship Federation have qualifications that may exclude the part-time student. Some of these activities and events require additional fees. Parents do not participate.
