Dear Ontario Christian Community,
The events of the past weeks have filled us with anger and sorrow. The death of George Floyd, and others who preceded him, is a tragedy that has had an impact on us and our community. We lament the acts of violence that have followed. We deplore the ugly sin of racism. With Christ’s Church, we heed the words of Ephesians 4:6 that there is “one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.” We recognize that, as sinful people who are in desperate need of a Savior, too often our earthly institutions as well as our words and actions have not reflected this truth.
Let us cling to the central teaching of “Imago Dei” – that we are all created in the image of God and thus all have divine value and worth. God loves and accepts each of us, so let us be true followers and doers of his word. Let us fulfill the biblical command to love one another.
We have to really see each other. Really listen to each other. Really pray for each other. We are committed to breaking down barriers, encouraging important and challenging conversations, promoting new learning, and taking strides to improve. We are committed to truly living out our mission and focusing on our core values. We must look at them in a new light that will bring God glory and unity to our campus and community. Let us be:
CHRIST-CENTERED – We are an intentional and unapologetically Christian school community. Everything we do and teach is biblically based and focused in order to honor God and follow Him faithfully.
SERVICE-ORIENTED – We are committed to establishing God-glorifying relationships in order to promote the positive impact the Gospel has in the world.
TRANSFORMATIVE – We are committed to building community in response to God’s call, emphasizing the transformation of the individual soul, mind, heart, and body through the work of Christ. We stress the redemptive, restorative, and transformative power of God’s grace in establishing His kingdom through the power of the Holy Spirit in the kingdom of God.
GRACE-FILLED – We are committed to building relationships as modeled to us by Jesus Christ. Being a disciple means sharing our faith boldly, showing kindness to all others, living joy-filled lives. By growing in empathy and understanding, we grow in grace.
We confess that Ontario Christian Schools has not always been attuned to the racial tensions at our school. Some of our alumni of color have told stories of how OC failed them. Where there has been brokenness, we pray for reconciliation. We ask for God’s blessing on the Ontario Christian Task Force on Race and Diversity, as it strives to improve OC’s professional development, policy, curriculum, and community engagement. We seek God’s guidance and ask for humility so we may reflect Christ to all we encounter.
As a community, please join us in praying for our brothers and sisters of color, for peace accompanied by justice in our cities and cities across the country, and for wisdom for our law enforcement officers and those God has placed in positions of authority. Let us pray for each other as we allow God to work in our hearts. May we, as brothers and sisters in Christ, commit to listening to each other, united in common purpose, to bring renewal to our nation, school, church, and home to root out the sin of racism.
The Board of Trustees and Administrative Team at Ontario Christian School
“May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.” (Romans 15:5-7)
