I have been teaching Reading for the Learning Center program at Ontario Christian since 1996. I work with students at the 1st-5th grade levels. Before becoming a reading teacher, I was a classroom teacher and taught at the pre-K, kindergarten, second, third, and fifth-grade levels. I graduated from Dordt College with a BA in elementary education and my area was special education. I took graduate courses through Cal State San Bernandino and Cal State Riverside in the area of reading. I also received special training at the Lindamood-Bell Learning Center in San Luis Obispo, and the Stowell Learning Center in Diamond Bar. I am also a member of the International Dyslexia Association.
I grew up on a farm in Iowa. After graduating from college, I taught in central Minnesota and then in Tempe, Arizona, before coming to Ontario Christian. I was drawn to southern California when I reconnected with a college friend, who happened to be Mr. Jasper, one of the fifth-grade teachers here at OC. Rick and I were married in Dec. 1985, and we were blessed with two sons, Kyle and Brett. My passion is teaching and I love reading, power walking, and spending time with my family.
As a Christian teacher, God has equipped me and called me to work specifically with children who need extra support so they are able to develop their God-given talents and gifts to use in His kingdom. God created us to glorify Him and walk in fellowship with Him. He made each of us unique and reveals and glorifies Himself through the diversity of His creation. I believe in the Lordship of Jesus Christ over all areas of life, including the education of students with exceptional needs. In 1 Corinthians 12, it clearly teaches that the body of Christ is an inclusive interdependent community. It affirms that each student has received special gifts to be used for God’s kingdom and that each is indispensable to the body of Christ. In 1 Corinthians 12:24-25, it says, “For God has combined the members of the body that…there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other”. I believe that our primary focus is never to merely develop academic excellence but to mold Christ-likeness. We should guard against defining students by what they can achieve but instead identifying students by Whose they are.
