Why do you enjoy teaching science? How do you see science and faith intertwine?
I think science is a great way to get a better appreciation of God and a greater understanding of His greatness. The more that we learn about our world, the more we see God’s hand in the intricate details of everything, from the small particles that make up atoms and cells, to the forces that hold planets, stars, and galaxies in place. Colossians 1:16 reminds us that, “by him all things were created… things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible… all things were created by him.” This is how I begin the year with my students and remind them throughout the year that what we are seeing is the result of God’s creative power. I think that science and faith fit together well, as the more we learn about the world, the more we should stand in awe of the God who created it all, who created us, and who wants that special relationship with us.
What is something about you that many people don’t know?
I played the organ for a minor league baseball team (the West Michigan Whitecaps) for a season before I moved to California. This really combined two of my loves – getting paid to watch baseball and play the piano (and the free food didn’t hurt either).
Tell me about your singing involvement at Purpose Church?
I actually do a lot more playing than singing. I do sing in the choir each week, and on worship team once a month, but I play my saxophone or piano/keyboards on most of the other weeks. This is actually one of the ways that my wife and I met, through the music department at our church (she has her Master’s degree in vocal performance and is on the music faculty at Azusa Pacific University).
You are known as a huge Star Wars fan. What do you think about the new Star Wars movie that just came out?
I saw the movie on the first Friday night that it came out and thought it was very well done. I saw it for a second time last week! I was happy to see some of the old characters as well as the fun and exciting story lines of the new characters as well. I’m already looking forward to the next movies over the next two years.
